2008 Meetings

July 3, 2008 at 7:30am: Water Quality by Matt Jones.  The upcoming talk will be on "Sustainable Water Resources": The EPA "Clean Water" Act; Challenges to water quality; and the "Green" connection.  This presentation will discuss the impact of these issues on NE IN and the benefits of improving water quality.

July 31, 2008 from 5pm to 8pm: NEIGBC Networking event @ Club Soda.  Come meet people in the environmental and energy field and have some appetizers and drinks.  More information to come.

August 7, 2008 at 7:30am: Wind Turbines: What are they? How cost effective are they? Can they be used in our area? by Steve Park and Doug Ahlfeld.

Sept. 4, 2008 at 7:30 am: IPFW Sustainable Construction Research Facility development Kick-Off

Oct. 2, 2008 at 7:30 am: Doug Ferrell from REMC will talk about the differences between Energy Star Homes and Touchstone Energy homes.

Nov. 6, 2008 at 7:30 am: Follow-up on IPFW Sustainable Construction Research Facility development

Dec. 4, 2008 at 7:30 am: Steve Park will lead a workshop discussing embodied energy. Just what is required to put that gallon of milk on the shelves, or that pencil.

 

January 3rd, 2008: Gardening and Sustainable Landscaping: What does sustainable gardening and landscaping look like and what does it take to make it happen. (LOCATION: City/County Building 1 E. Main St. Fort Wayne, IN 46802 - City Council Chambers).

January 31st, 2008: Megan Moss, NEIGBC President will be giving a talk on Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Construction at IPFW in Kettler Hall at 12pm.  This is part of the Focus the Nation program hosted by Advocates for a Global Future from 10am to 4pm.

February 7th, 2008: Joint meeting with the local ASHRAE chapter covering the latest standards. (LOCATION: Sweetwater Sound 5501 US Hwy 30 W Fort Wayne, IN 46818)

March 6th, 2008: Tour of Sweetwater Sound's new facility - Join us on a tour including some of the key people involved in the design and construction of this new facility pursuing LEED Gold. (LOCATION: Sweetwater Sound 5501 US Hwy 30 W Fort Wayne, IN 46818)

April 3, 2008 at 7:30am:  "The beneficial reuse of waste generated by contractors and industry" by Candace Imbody

Presenting the options that are available for recycling the non-hazardous waste streams that are generated daily in our community. How we can make a difference with beneficial reuse both economically and environmentally in our industry processes. Identifying the wastes that can be recycled. Using source reduction as a tool for conserving resources. We will be sharing some national and local statistics that may be surprising!

May 1, 2008 at 7:30am: Green Innovation Award - Join us as we announce the winners of this years awards. Location TBA

June 5, 2008 at 7:30am:  Fort Wayne’s Mayor Tom Henry will speak about the city’s green initiatives.

January 4, 2007 at 7:30am:  Brainstorming session using open space technology.  Where do we go from here?

Location: 3010 Butler Ridge Pkwy, located 500 feet West of Hillegas Road on the South side of Butler Road.

 

February 1, 2007 at 7:30am: (View slides from presentation) Wendy Barrott, Director of Energy and Environmental Services for the City of Ft. Wayne &  Mayor Graham Richard’s Green Ribbon Commission recommendations to the City of Fort Wayne

She will be reviewing the Green Ribbon Commission Report recommendations and goals and provide an update on the status of the city's implementation. Fort Wayne has committed to “The 2030 Agreement,” so what can we citizens do to help us achieve that commitment?

April 5, 2007 at 7:30am: “Participation Design Charrette for the Habitat Sustainability Project”

Beginning next fall we, the Northeast Indiana Green Build Coalition, will be collaborating with senior Construction Engineering Technology students and the Center for the Built Environment at IPFW, and Habitat for Humanity to design and build a sustainable residence.  Our Coalition is filled with a diverse group of disciplines and multi-talented people, which expands the ways in which we can participate in this project.  The purpose of this meeting will be to work together to identify what we are able to contribute, and how we will proceed.

 May 3, 2007 at 7:30am: Treasuring and Valuing our Water Resources

Kent Halloran, PE with DLZ here in Fort Wayne, was the project manager for the Camp Scott wetland development project, and he'll be speaking about that project and the general impact of wetlands on water quality. Also, Jane Loomis, Executive Director for the St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative, will speak about a number of projects they are conducting and the impact on our water quality.

June 7, 2007 at 7:30am: Geothermal

July 12, 2007 at 7:30am: Biomimicry, presented by Theresa Bissell, Chair, Science Dept., Ivy Tech.  Download the Power Point here.

August 2nd: Acres Land Trust. 

Jason Kissel, Executive Director of ACRES will be our speaker next Thursday morning. ACRES is Indiana's oldest and largest land trust, dedicated to preserving natural areas in northeast Indiana. ACRES owns and manages 61 nature preserves totaling over 4200 acres.

Sept 6th: Global Climate Change presentation

John Steinbach of Grassroots Green will present slides from the award winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth.  Mr. Steinbach trained with Al Gore so that he was able to provide this presentation to us.

September 29, 2007: NEIGBC + Habitat + IPFW Collaborative Design Charette for a sustainable residence for Habitat for Humanity.

8:00 AM to 3:00 PM in Walb Student Union, room 222-4-6. This will be a completely creative day! We will be collaborating with students from IPFW's Center for the Built Environment and Habitat for Humanity family, staff, board members, and volunteers to design a sustainable residence. We will be filming the process of the Charette and will be creating DVD's to send out to Habitat throughout the United States for training purposes. If you would like to register to participate in the Charette, please e-mail Regina at leffersr@ipfw.edu. Breakfast and lunch will be served.

Oct. - "This Old Green House" by Professor Matt Kubik from IPFW, and Angie Quinn, Executive Director of ARCH. These two knowledgeable people will use their expertise to help us understand what we can do in our own homes to make them more energy efficient. Matt has just completed extensive research on this, and Angie has just completed greening up an ARCH home.
 

November 1st at 7:30am  IPFW + NEIGBC + Habitat design presentation

 Students will be presenting the final design prints and specs for our professional feedback and final "tweaking" of any design/sustainability problems. Northeast Indiana Green Build Coalition and Habitat for Humanity to  provide feedback (to be filmed).  This will be at Water Furnace.

Dec. 6th, 2007 - Doug Ahlfeld presents on Solar Hot Water Heating at Water Furnace.


January 5, 2006 at 7.30 am "Biomimicry"   - Read summary of meeting

We will have a panel discussion on Janine Benyus' book, Biomimicry.  Matt Kubik from IPFW, Steve Park from Moake Park, and Theresa Bissel, Chair of Science Dept. at Ivy Tech will be the panelists.  It won't be necessary for people to read the book before the meeting, though it is one of the "bible's" of Green literature.  More information on the subject is also available at the biomimicry website.  It promises to be a very interesting program.


February 2, 2006 at 7:30am  "New Urbanism"  - Read summary of meeting

We will be viewing a brief video of Andres Duany's "new urbanism" and green communities, with a panel discussion.  Jay Abernathy will lead the panelists: Beth Beams, Ann Helmke, Rose Newman Clevinger and one additional community leader (to be announced).


March 2, 2006 at 7:30am "Winning the Oil End Game" Download book

Cheryl Ryan, Director of Business Development at SES, will lead a group discussion on the book: Winning the Oil End Game, by Amory Lovins, one of the founders of the Rocky Mountain Institute.  We can download it from the internet at www.oilendgame.com.
 

 


April 6, 2006 at 7:30am "Construction Experiences in Building Green"

Luke Gascho, Executive Director of Merry Lea Environmental Center of Goshen College, will present Construction Experiences in Building Green. Work began on the first phase of Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center's collegiate facility in May 2005 with occupancy in March 2006. This project is registered at the platinum level with the U.S. Green Building Council. Luke will share a photographic journey of the construction processes. The presentation will highlight how the top rating criteria are being achieved in the site and landscaping, energy efficiency, water conservation, interior air quality, as well as innovative aspects. This is a great opportunity to hear how a carefully integrated design has been constructed and to better understand the LEED rating system. Challenges and achievements will be noted. The seminar will conclude with a time for questions and answers.

May 4, 2006 at 7:30am  "Sustainable Landscaping" - Read summary of meeting

Greening for the summer. Beth Beams and panel members: Dan Earnst from Earth Source, Mo Palmer, landscape designer and Sue Kruse, Master Gardener will talk about sustainable landscaping and practical applications for homes.

JUNE 2006

June 1, 2006 at 7:30am "Permaculture Design: A case study"

Carol Tunell, an Architect who is relatively new to Fort Wayne and who has twenty years of experience as an architect specializing in permaculture design, and Sister Rita Weinken from the Earth Literacy Center in Tiffin, Ohio, will talk about a completed permaculture project and will explain how it benefits the entire community. The project is the renovation of an abandoned dairy barn into an Earth Literacy Education Center.  Carol will explain the basic principles of Permaculture design and then Sister Rita will talk about how they applied the principles to the barn renovation.  Sister Rita is currently immersed in adding a Community Supported Agriculture farm, named “Hope Farm” to the facility.



July 6, 2006 at 7:30am "Design Charette for the Mayor's Green Ribbon Commission" Read the notes from the charette

Design charette to help the Mayor's Green Ribbon Commission generate ideas for goals for the city in the area of air quality and energy use. Steve Park will be leading the charette. It will be highly participatory, so people should come with the idea that they will be involved in the process. It should be both fun and interesting.

September 7, 2006 at 7:30am "Cohousing and New Urbanism"

Megan Moss, leader of Northeast Indiana Cohousing will give a brief explanation of cohousing, its history and its possibilities for this area as well as introducing the concept of New Urbanism. This will be followed by a group discussion. Cohousing is a type of housing that allows for greater resident interaction through the design of the community. October 5, 2006 at 7:30am "Green Construction Costs"

Jonathan Moss, President of Moss Construction Cost Management will present an overview of key cost issues  relating to sustainable construction with particular focus on LEED NC certification. Jonathan has been costing and managing construction in the US and internationally for 22 years, and is pioneering cost analysis techniques in the field of green construction. Jonathan worked on the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, one of the earliest LEED certified buildings.

NOVEMBER 2006

IPFW and Northeast Indiana Green Build Coalition co-hosting showing of two films highlighting global climate change

As a Prelude to both movies, the room will open at 6:00PM with a variety of "learning stations" set up. Both movies will start at 7 PM in Walb Ballroom. Following the movies those who wish to stay can participate in a discussion about the films.

November 9, 2006 HBO documentary Too Hot Not to Handle

Jenny Weatherford, Office of International Programs, Regina Leffers, Dept. of Civil and Architectural Engineering Technology, and Wendy Barrott, Energy and Environmental Services for the City of Fort Wayne will give brief introductions before the film. 

November 28, 2006 Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth

Just before the movie begins, Chancellor Wartell will welcome the group to IPFW, and speak for a couple of minutes about sustainability at IPFW, both now and in the future . For more information about the movie go to http://www.climatecrisis.net/

December 7, 2006 at 7:30am "Greening the Holidays and Christmas Party"

Location: Summit Club, 25th floor, National City Bank Building, 110 W. Berry St., downtown Fort Wayne.

Very good food is involved, so there is a cost this time: $10 for members; $15 for non-members.

   Schedule:

   7:15am to 7:45am - coffee, orange juice, and we actually get to talk to each other!!!

   7:45am - food presentation by Chef Edwardo -- organic food with a South American flair!

   7:45am to 8:15am - Eat great food!

   8:15am - present Green Innovation Awards.
